Non-local architects are usually unaware of Hawaii’s architectural heritage beyond the kitsch. When these architects are commissioned to work in Hawaii, the pressures to accept or decline style does not inevitably affect their process. Altruistic architects with anti-colonial sentiments often become culprits to the insensitive principals of the Sarasota or Googie pedagogy when trying to create a Hawaiian sense of place. However, there are living remnants of Hawaiian regional architecture and its various forms have powerful meanings embedded within them.
